Do you know how to dilute chemical products? It is quite common for cleaning products to have different types of dilution for different dirt intensities. Using a very concentrated product for light dirt can generate unnecessary expense and in some cases even stain the surface, depending on the product used.

How to make the correct dilution?

Every concentrated product has an indication of dilution on its label. This dilution is usually written as follows:

1:10 or 1:20 or 1:40 - What does that mean?

A 1:10 dilution means that 10% of your mixture will be product, 90% will be water. So, in a 1 liter bottle for example you will add 100ml of product and 900ml of water.

Examples (considering 1 liter of mixture)

  • 1:10 - 100ml of chemical product; 900ml of water
  • 1:15 - 66ml of chemical product; 934ml of water
  • 1:20 - 50ml of chemical: 950ml of water
  • 1:30 - 33ml of chemical: 967ml of water
  • 1:50 - 20ml of chemical: 980ml of water

A 1:20 dilution means that 5% of your mixture is product, the rest 95% is water. Just divide 1 by 20, which is equal to 0.05 or 5%. So, if you have a 1 liter bottle you can simply add 50ml of product to 950ml of water.

IMPORTANT TIP!

Never leave a mixture of chemicals in the applicator for more than 1 week. There is a high chance that the chemical will react with the impurities in the water we use for dilution. We usually use tap water. This water can contain numerous substances such as chlorine, magnesium, salts, metals, coliforms. Everything depends on each supply unit and the storage treatment. Chemicals can react to these substances causing a bad smell or loss of efficiency.
