How to remove pen scratches from fabrics and leather - Professional technique

Did your son scratch the car seat? Canetinha on the white sofa in the living room? And now? How can I effectively remove pen ink from the fabric of the sofa, chair or leather in a way that will not damage the fabric after the process? Here we will show you everything you need to know to remove marks and stains from pens in an easy way and without harming the fabric.

The first thing is to know what type of pen was used to scratch. A marker has an alcohol solvent, some are a water solvent. Highlighter pens, permanent pens, ballpoint pens, all have a big difference between them. Identifying them is already half done.

If the ink solvent is water, as in most ballpoint pens, the pure water itself already removes it. Simply dilute the paint as much as possible and rub lightly. An alcohol-based marker is easily removed with alcohol, which is the diluent of this ink. In summary, removing the ink stain basically consists of finding the diluent of this ink and using it to dissolve the pigment as much as possible.

A very important point is that red, blue, black pens have different pigments. Usually this pigment is powdered, surrounded by a kind of plasticizer. It is very clear when we look at the pigment under the microscope. In this case, it is sometimes important to use an acidic cleaning product such as Oxy2 or Zbac to break the paint plasticizer and then dilute it. They are very easy to use and manipulate products, very affordable. To better understand this tip, watch the video below that shows a step by step of removing the pen marks on a suede fabric:
