Have you heard any upholsterer comment that fabric waterproofing damages the fabric? Or a seller of furniture or fabrics? Is it myth or truth?

It is quite common to hear that waterproofing a sofa can destroy the fabric, which may show discoloration or dryness. Its texture resembles the texture of a newspaper sheet: dry, brittle. Unfortunately this is not a myth, it is true. But a half truth, as it does not happen with all types of waterproofing on the market.

Understanding the problem

To start talking about the problem, let's understand the composition of waterproofing materials:

  • silicone resins
  • fluorinated resins
  • SiO2

Waterproofing based on silicone silicone resins are the most common in the Brazilian market. They are cheaper than fluorinated resins and have a good performance combined with a low cost. They can be soluble in solvent or water. This is where you will understand exactly what happens.

Silicone resins, when dry, form a block similar to a clear plastic. This happens when over-dried. these resins combined with the most used solvents in solvent-based waterproofing materials such as hexane, isoparaffin and benzene cause an instant reaction in the fabric, which may even lose part of its pigmentation due to the reaction with the solvent. When applying this type of product in abundance, the drying of the silicone resin hardens the fabric, which becomes dry and brittle. It is a big problem that has no solution after the damage.

Water-based waterproofing products that use emulsified resins do not present this problem. However, when applied in excess they can form small round spots caused by the drying of the asset. However, dryness and tissue hardening reactions are not present in these products.

In the case of SiO2-based products that are completely translucent and odorless (there is no SiO2-based product with a cloudy or whitish color) there is no risk of staining. That's because SiO2 is used in nanometer size. It is the case of Ecotextil, the strongest waterproofing agent in Brazil. It uses SiO2 particles as a nano principle. Next to a glass of water, it is impossible to know where the product is and where the pure water is. This product category does not create overlap and acts by "embracing" the wefts of the fabric. They do not cause stains on any type of fabric. Since it is also non-toxic, it can be used by anyone.
